Support the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program

The National WIC Association will be hosting WIC breastfeeding peer counselors from key congressional districts in Washington, DC on Tuesday, January 15 to meet with legislators and educate them about this critical program. It is important to inform members of Congress about the role of WIC breastfeeding peer counselors as the FY 2020 appropriations cycle begins here in DC this winter. The appropriations process will determine the funding level for the program moving forward, and NWA hopes we can achieve full funding at the authorized level of $90 million.  For nearly a decade, the program has been underfunded at $60 million, which is not sufficient to allow all clinics to provide peer counselor services.

Please join us in supporting these peer counselors by participating in our virtual day of action!  You can use this action alert to email, tweet, or call your members of Congress.  NWA has already written the message for you, so all you need to do is provide your name and address.

Please Note: This is a lobbying action.

As a reminder, it is your democratic right to lobby. Lobbying is a particular type of advocacy involving an attempt to influence specific legislation by communicating directly with an elected official or his or her staff. Each state has specific laws for state employees about lobbying efforts while on the job. We recommend limiting lobbying efforts to coffee breaks, lunch breaks, after hours and other times not considered “work time.”
