Support the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program

It is important to inform members of Congress about the role of WIC breastfeeding peer counselors as the FY 2020 appropriations cycle begins here in DC. The appropriations process will determine the funding level for the program moving forward, and NWA hopes we can achieve full funding at the authorized level of $90 million. For nearly a decade, the program has been underfunded at $60 million, which is not sufficient to allow all clinics to provide peer counselor services. In June 2019, the House included record investment for peer counselors in their FY 2020 Agricultural Appropriations bill, matching the authorized level of $90 million. The Senate included a more modest increase in their Agriculture Appropriations bill of $80 million. The WIC community must speak clearly that the full increase reflected in the House funding level is best matched with the need in clinics.
Please join us in supporting peer counselors by contacting your member of Congress!  You can use this action alert to email, tweet, or call your members of Congress.  NWA has already written the message for you, so all you need to do is provide your name and address.

Please Note: This is a lobbying action.

As a reminder, it is your democratic right to lobby. Lobbying is a particular type of advocacy involving an attempt to influence specific legislation by communicating directly with an elected official or his or her staff. Each state has specific laws for state employees about lobbying efforts while on the job. We recommend limiting lobbying efforts to coffee breaks, lunch breaks, after hours and other times not considered “work time.”
